PICS FROM LAST WEEK:
- Simple Pulleys
- Inclined Planes
- Pulleys and Inclined Planes
- . . .
- . . .
- . . .
- . . .
- The Villatoro Short Cut. Think of the inclined plane-pulley system as one body (like the blue in the picture above) It comes down to the helping forces minus the hurting forces divided by the total mass equals the acceleration.
- . . .
- . . .
- The world’s first machine. An inclined plane
- The inclined plane gives you a force advantage, but a distance disadvantage.
- Simple Pulley systems
- . . .
- Simple pulley systems “fool” the hanging mass into thinking that there are many ropes supporting it, when, in fact, it is only one rope. The price you pay for this machine is that if you get an Ideal mechanical Advantage of 5, you have to pull out 5 times the amount of rope.
- Work is probably the most important concept we cover this year.
- So Force times time is impulse. Force “dotted” with displacement is “work”.
- If you have force parallel to the displacement, you get ALL the force acting through the displacement because cosine of zero is 1.
- Nm are the units for work. Joules are the units for energy.
- Reminder that Work is the DOT PRODUCT of F and ∆x.
- Force acts through the entire distance. This force is doing positive work. This pours energy into the system.
- The force is doing negative work which causes energy to drain from the system.
- If the angle between Force and displacement is obtuse (90<theta<180), then cosine is negative and therefore, the work done on the system is negative.
- Dot products are called “scalar products” in Physics
- Positive work pours energy into the system. Negative work drains energy from the system.
