LAST WEEK:
Mon (2/9) — Discuss week; Slide Show; JM, BOW, Forces, Hand Out 7.1
Tues (2/10) — ROCKETRY YOU MUST BE THERE . . . WE ARE FIBERGLASSING TODAY; HUGE DAY IN PHYSICS. We begin Free Body Diagrams (FBDs) which is the main emphasis of 2nd semester Physics. Hand Out 7.2
Wed (2/11) — FBD’s (THE most important sheet of the year!)
Thur (2/12) — FBDs; GUEST SPEAKER (Pick and Hammer) Probably Pizza.
Fri (2/13) —
I’ll add captions to these this weekend.
- Impulse is a HUGE concept in Physics. We will do a sheet on it this week.
- Gravitational mass vs. Inertial mass. Same thing numerically, but different conceptually.
- . . .
- . . .
- Physicists love elevators because they can easily become non inertial frames of reference. A non inertial frame of reference is one that is secretly accelerating. What I mean by that is that the observer is inside the reference frame and doesn’t realize she is accelerating. The laws of Physics will not work for them. Take this accelerating elevator for instance.
- Einstein showed that gravity is not truly a force (like the other three fundamental forces) if the observer inside the accelerating frame of reference can be fooled by a secret acceleration of the frame of reference.
- . . .
- . . .
- . . .
- The equivalence Principal
- Einstein’s light “thought experiment” on light and acceleration.
- The very specific definition of gravitational mass.
- THis is extremely important to know.
- A space hotel is a non inertial frame of reference. Which basically means that it is “secretly” accelerating. At least the people staying at the hotel don’t really need to think about the effect the spin is having on their inertia, they just feel as if they are back on Earth.
- The elevator ride from the center non rotating column to the living quarters will be hell on the stomachs of the riders. THere will have to be lots of breaks.
- Artists conception of the view. Actually, the room won’t look anything like this.
- I doubt they will have this by 2030 . . . maybe 2050.
- Hilton wants in on the action.
- Virgin Galactic
- Our first FBD!!
- Weight is equal to mass times the acceleration due to gravity. This is just a specific case of Newtons 2nd Law. F = ma
- So only draw Force vectors on FBDs. I suppose if you want to draw other vectors like ∆X or V or a, do them in a different color.
- A good explanation that Mr. Sanchez and I put together a dozen years ago.
- Shows both the picometer scale and the micrometer scale of friction.
- An album magnified. The grooves are what the stylus glides through. This is the first step in the production of vinyl music.
- An even more enlarged view of the grooves of a vinyl record. Notice that at this level nothing is smooth. The micrometer source of friction.
- Static friction can never do work. Isn’t that sad? but it can keep this dude from slipping.
